In an era too often marked by acts of incivility, Robert’s Fund aims to elevate the way we treat one another in the legal profession and to inspire acts of courtesy, kindness, and compassion among members of the profession. Increased civility demonstrably improves outcomes for legal professionals and the people that they serve. And because legal professionals profoundly influence society, even outside their formal work, their behavior often sets the tenor of corporate, political, and social interactions. Programs Exclusively for Judges

Why focus on judges?

Judges play a unique role in fostering civility in the legal profession. As the primary manager of courtrooms, judges have the responsibility to establish an environment of fair and respectful process. Judges set the tone for that environment by the way they communicate their expectations of attorneys and the code of conduct; by how they model communication and express empathy; and by how they work to promote justice. Having practiced law, judges also understand the unique economic and client challenges that many lawyers face. As leaders, judges also have served on committees within the Bar associations and community organizations and understand the dynamics that give rise to less than civil behavior.

Although there is value in having judges participate in discussions about civility with lawyers in our seminars for legal professionals, Robert’s Fund also appreciates that there is also value in having programs designed exclusively for judges. Given their role in the legal system and society, sometimes judges may feel they can share more openly with other judges. Robert’s Fund offers the following programs exclusively for judges:

Judicial Roundtable Discussions, a series of facilitated conversations to gain a better understanding of how judges promote civility in their courts; to learn how judges perceive the role of civility in the legal profession; to learn how judges identify factors that lead to incivility; and to glean advice for lawyers and clients on how to foster civility and how civil behavior will ensure a better result.

CJE Presentations designed for judicial conferences. These programs can vary in length and content to facilitate fostering civility in our courts.

Consulting and Custom Programs designed for judges, court administrators, and court staff. These programs can vary in length and content to facilitate fostering civility in our courts.
